As you may already know, a panel of federal judges released new Kansas election maps on Thursday, June 7th. The filing deadline for candidates was the following Monday, June 11th. As a result of the redistricting, the current Kansas House of Representative for the 25th district, Barbara Bollier, now resides in the 21st district. I have known Barbara and her family my entire life. I had never considered opposing her for the 25th House seat, but now, the new 25th district (roughly 47th Street to 67th Street and State Line to Lamar) was without an incumbent representative.
Statewide, a mad scramble of incumbent legislators and political parties ensued, renting apartments in new districts and rounding up new candidates to run. I wasn't a part of those conversations, but here is what I can tell you.
I have lived in Northeast Johnson County,
in the 25th District, for 44 years. I represented a part of the 25th district for 11 years on the Prairie Village City Council. My wife, Nicki, and I are raising
our 2 sons in the house where I grew up.
I know this area, the families have invested in our neighborhoods and have chosen to live here for
a reason… reasons that I understand: quality schools, conservative
fiscal policies and moderate social values.
